American
inventors produced some of the most artistic, interesting, amusing, and safe match
holders, using all kinds of materials. Every imaginable form was used as a subject. There
were match holders to hand on the wall, to sit on the table, and even to carry in one's
pocket. Match containers were also combined with other items such as gas light fixtures,
calendars, inkwells, cigar cutters, thermometers, and bells.
The following photos are a sampling of
the match holders which were displayed at the McHenry Museum. |
